The History of ’Spirit of Sacramento’ and ’Island Girl’ The original ’Spirit of Sacramento’ was a 56 year old, wooden paddlewheeler operating on the rivers of California since 1942. Unfortunately, she was lost to fire in 1996 and the efforts to replace her began. A suitable replacement paddlewheeler named ’Becky Thatcher’ was found in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was purchased and rechristeneed ’Spirit of Sacramento.’ This began as a truly remarkable journey down the Mississippi and out to sea to arrive in Sacramento, California under her own power. Our route was through the Gulf of Mexico, around Cuba and the Bay of Nicaragua, to the Panama Canal. The ’Spirit’ locked through the Canal on April 8, 1997 and crossed over to the Pacific Ocean. Heavy weather and pounding seas kept us near-coastal (5-20 miles off shore) for safety, as the Captain said, ’We’ll keep one foot on the beach lads’. Migrating whales and sport fish escorted us up the West Coast and we entered the Golden Gate, shrouded by fog on May 15, 1997. Upon arrival in Sacramento, the ’Spirit’ accomplished a historic journey. She traveled 8,500 miles by sea with a crew of five, burned 38,000 gallons of fuel, used 13,500 gallons of water and consumed 1,824 pounds of food underway. Unfortunately, not a drop of liquor was allowed onboard. As a comparison, our journey was analogous to driving your car from San Francisco to New York and back to San Francisco at 7 miles per hour! ’Island Girl’ was built in 1990. She is used to host the majority of smaller private charters including weddings,
